چکیده

First demonstrated in 1968 [Suther68], head-mounted displays [HMDs] have the potential to immerse a user inside a “virtual world,” where the user can view and interact with computer-generated three-dimensional environments. However, today’s systems far fall short of creating completely convincing virtual environments. Much work remains in overcoming limitations in the technologies that drive HMDs: the tiny video displays placed in front of the user’s eyes, the graphics engine that generates the images seen on those displays, and the tracking system that determines the position and orientation of the user’s head. Equally important is a lack of demonstrated, serious applications that would greatly benefit from HMDs.

Dissertation Proposal A Systems-Engineering Study of the Registration Errors in a Virtual-Environment System for Cranio-Facial Surgery Planning

Head-mounted displays (HMDs) can be divided into two categories: opaque (the real world view is totally or partially blocked by the display apparatus) and see-through (the computer image is superimposed onto the real world). Each type has its own uses and advantages, depending on the application. See-through head-mounted displays (STHMDs) can be further subdivided into optical STHMDs and video-...

A Nonobscuring Eye Tracking Solution for Wide Field-of-View Head-mounted Displays

We present a solution for integrating a binocular eye tracker into current state-of-the-art lens-based head-mounted displays (HMDs) without affecting the available field-of-view on the display. Estimating the relative eye gaze of the user opens the door for HMDs to a much wider spectrum of virtual reality applications and games. Further, we present a concept of a low-cost head-mounted display w...

On the number of viewing zones required for head-tracked autostereoscopic display

A head-tracked display could be made from a two-view autostereoscopic display where head-tracking allows the display to swap the two views when the eyes move from viewing zone to viewing zone. Variations in human interpupillary distance mean that this basic two-view version will not work well for the significant minority of the population who have interpupillary distance significantly different...

Viewing model for stereoscopic head-mounted displays

We characterize a class of stereoscopic displays, which includes head-mounted displays that incorporate miniature cathode-ray tubes. We present a detailed viewing model that accounts for the placement, size, and orientation of the virtual display images. The model is appropriate for several types of head-mounted display, as well as head-tracked stationary displays. The tracking algorithm accoun...

Predicting Arm Movements in Virtual Environments

Studies conducted at the Stanford Virtual Human Interaction Lab (VHIL) place subjects in virtual environments where they must converse and interact with other subjects as well as avatars and embodied agents. To do this, we place subjects in head-mounted displays, which block out other visual stimuli and allow the user to "enter" a virtual world. We also put infrared trackers on subjects, which ...
